Surety Association of Ohio
3rd Quarter Meeting Minutes
September 26, 2006

The Surety Association of Ohio (SAO) held its 2006 3rd Quarter meeting at the Blair Center in Westfield Center , Ohio on September 26, 2006. A formal board meeting was after the conference.

Shortly after lunch, Jack Kehl, President of the Association introduced Henry Reder of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP, who gave a presentation on Construction Management – CM at risk VS. CM Agency.

Jack subsequently thanked Henry for his presentation and thanked the members for their attendance and reminded everyone about the annual Christmas Party.

The following SAO board members Jack Kehl, James Pappas, Bill Wildenheim, George Siegler, Gayle McClellan, Steve Sullivan, Lou Colagrossi then discussed the following after the presentation:

  • The meeting was called to order. No board meeting was held in the second quarter, thus no minutes from the golf outing were prepared. Bill Wildenheim provided the August 31, 2006 financials – see attached.
  • Gayle’s membership dues report was reviewed and discussed, noting some members still have not paid, nor had some people paid for today’s event. Gayle explained that today’s event cost about $22.50 per person, which should be covered easily by the $25 fee per person. Of the 51 registered, 47 attended, but 10 had not yet paid.
  • Lou had no updates from the Legislative side. It was brought up that maybe we could work with Henry Reder as he is on the AIA Forms and Documents Committee to help protect the surety.
  • Steve reported that we had no applications for the Surety Scholarship and worse yet, no inquiries. Given the lack of interest the last few years, the board voted unanimously to look into different uses of the funds. In lieu of the scholarship, several other options were discussed – i.e. donating money to the Steve Engelke Memorial Fund, OCA or local colleges. Steve agreed to look into the options. Steve also will prepare a spreadsheet to document our progress in reaching the SAA Gold Award.
  • Discussions were held regarding planning for the 4th quarter meeting. It was suggested and agreed by all to again hold the annual Christmas party at the Columbus Easton Hilton.
  • 2007 Board Nominations – With Jack stepping down from the President’s role and Jackie Christensen and Gayle McClellan also stepping down, several positions need filled. Steve Sullivan is undecided. Troy Wolfe was not in attendance to commit one way or the other. James Pappas has agreed to accept the President’s role and Bill Wildenheim agreed to stay on as Treasurer. Lou Colagrossi and George Siegler agreed to stay on the board, but their positions have not been decided. Everyone agreed to look into getting names for nominations to James Pappas by October 31. These positions will then be discussed further in a board phone conference call in early November.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 3:30. The next meeting is planned for December 6 in conjunction with the Christmas Party.
